The prince unbolted the door, opened it, and - stepped back in amazement, startled out of his wits. Nastasya Filippovna stood before him. He recognized her at once from her portrait. Her eyes flashed with annoyance when she saw him. She walked quickly into the hall, pushing him out of the way with her shoulder, and said angrily, as she flung off her fur coat:
"If you're too lazy to mend the bell, you might at least wait in the hall when people knock. There, now he's gone and dropped my coat, the oaf!"
